Unfortunately negativity can take over your life without you really knowing it. It’s perfectly normal to be in a bad mood every now and then, but sometimes you’ll be so overwhelmingly negative that it’ll get in the way of reaching your goals.

Having a negative attitude hurts the people around you. Perhaps more importantly, it hurts you. When you determine the underlying cause of your negative attitude and take action to turn it around, you can begin a journey to the positive side of thinking.

Your goals and dreams for your life are a wonderful possibility. It may be a difficult journey to get there, but it’s certainly possible if you adopt a positive attitude and take concerted action to make them happen.

1. Self-talk. You’re constantly telling yourself things throughout the day. You’re forming opinions, deciding what to do, and determining your self-worth. You can start correcting the way you think by paying close attention to your self-talk.

• When you’re in the bathroom in the morning getting ready to go out and face the world, what are you telling yourself? Are you thinking about how much you’re going to accomplish today? Or are you getting yourself ready for failure? Take the positive route and your day will surely be better.

2. Look for the silver lining. The silver lining is always there waiting for you to discover it. When the chips are down, it’s especially easy to just wallow in negative energy. Know that you have the power to find that one small positive light among all the negativity.

3. Use daily affirmations. Affirmations can combat negativity as soon as the negative thought arrives in your head. Repeat positive affirmations to yourself daily, or post them in a place where you can see them often.

• Remember just how powerful your mind is. When you continuously feed your mind with positivity, you can’t help but to become more positive.

4. Reduce stress. Negativity has a tendency to arise out of stressful situations. If you lead a high stress life, then these stressful situations may become the norm for you. Your best bet is to find a way to get out of too many stressful situations, or at least study ways to better deal with the stress.

5. Give yourself time to think. Instead of letting yourself get carried away with a negative situation, choose to give yourself time to think before speaking your mind. Then you can act wisely, instead of reacting negatively.

If you’re human, you’re going to be dealing with difficult people from time to time. You’ll find them at work, at home, or even while out shopping. While you’ll likely to solve a problem with a relative or friend differently than a stranger, there are also some universal ways of communicating effectively with difficult people.

Here are some tips to turn those lions into lambs:

1. Give them the benefit of the doubt. See if you can get to the root of why they’re acting difficult. Sometimes people are just having a bad day. Or perhaps the reason could have nothing to do with the situation at hand, but something else in their life.

2. Be kind. Fighting fire with fire often makes the situation worse. If someone’s being difficult with you, just keep a cool head and remain calm and kind. Chances are that this person will appreciate the fact that you’re being patient.

• Kindness can help your relationship with any difficult person. Even if you don’t particularly feel like being kind, try it at every opportunity. You could end up making a new friend!

3. Focus on the positive. This tip is especially important when the difficult person in your life is a family member. Because that person will always be in your life, it would benefit you in many ways to have a positive relationship. Even if they are difficult, they have some good aspects too. Spend your time focusing on and bringing out these positive aspects.

4. Avoid pointing fingers. It’s tempting to place blame for difficult situations on the other person. Adopt the mentality that neither of you are to blame for the problem. It’ll help you gain peace and clarity about the situation.

• It’s also important not to fight the other person. You don’t want to be considered a difficult person either. Practice expressing your opinion without resorting to arguments.

5. Focus on the humor. You’ve probably been in a difficult situation before where you suffered at the time, but later it turned out to be quite a humorous story. Find the humor in your current difficulty. It may help you both be more relaxed and apt to seek a positive solution.

6. Determine what can be remedied. Focus on the particular things that you can take action on in the situation. For instance, if you’re having a problem at work, mediate the problem if possible. In fixing what you can, you might find that many unresolved issues with others resolve themselves.

• You also need to have the wisdom to understand when you won’t be able to change something. You may need to come to terms with the fact that a person will always cause you difficulty. This acceptance alone may help you to better deal with this person.

7. Get help from others. You may be able to find someone who has gone through a very similar situation. Ask them how they handled the problem. This other person may be able to show you how to approach the situation with a different mindset. After all, you never really know what piece of important advice someone else may be able to give you.

4. Play music. That moment when the alarm goes off might be the toughest part for you. Rather than being startled awake, wake to your favorite relaxing music. Enjoying the first few minutes that you’re awake can make a big difference in your whole morning.

5. Meditate. Meditation can help you instill both energy and inner peace that you can carry throughout your hectic day.

• As you meditate, sit in an upright position so that you’re not tempted to fall back asleep.

How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

Do you struggle to keep your New Year’s resolutions? More than likely, the excitement of starting a New Year wanes away and you find yourself back into your old routines.

With proper motivation and the will to change, you can be the exception to this trend. The trick is to turn your optimism for the New Year into concrete actions. Once you start a routine, it becomes easier to follow through.

Whether you’re making multiple resolutions or wanting to work towards one bigger goal, be sure to pick something that’s achievable within the year’s time frame.

Set Achievable and Clear Goals

Strive for making your goals achievable so you don’t set yourself up for future failure. For example, let’s say your goal is to lose weight. Determine where you stand currently, and then give yourself a goal that can be achieved following the 1-2 pounds per week guideline.

You’ll also benefit from making clear goals. Rather than saying that you want to be thinner, say how many pounds you’d like to lose. Then define the "how" as well. Taking action is usually where people tend to run into some trouble. It’s easy to get pumped up about an idea, but when it comes down to executing your plan, you might be tempted to fall short.

In this situation, you only need to muster up the energy to start. Tell yourself that you’re going to stick to your new plan for one week and then evaluate how it went. On the other hand, if you take everything in all at once, you’ll be less likely to begin in the first place. If it looks overwhelming, just focus on the short term.

Form a Routine

The reason you want to take baby steps at first is because once you form a new routine, it’s actually easy to hold yourself to it. Some say that it takes as little as two weeks to get a new routine engrained in your brain.

For example, in the weight loss scenario, starting an exercise routine can be especially grueling if you’re out of shape. The first two days can leave you tired, sore, and weak. That doesn’t sound like fun at all! However, those first two days are the worst you’ll endure. After your routine is built, you may find that you look forward to your exercise sessions.

Reward Yourself

Reward yourself often for your excellent efforts because you deserve it for working hard to change yourself for the better. You don’t need to wait until the end of the year to treat yourself.

Break up your goals into smaller pieces and every time you achieve a milestone, give yourself something that you enjoy. It could be an item you’ve been wanting or maybe a night out on the town.

How to Manage Anger

To succeed in managing your anger, there are two requisites: the ability to control your emotions and the ability to think before taking action.

Uncontrolled anger can be dangerous to yourself and to the people around you. It can damage relationships, cause emotional scars and inflict physical harm.

Anger as a Fundamental Emotion

When you are threatened, one of the emotions you will feel is anger. The emotion is important, because it sometimes helps you escape from dangerous circumstances. Perceived threats evoke the same response though, and this is when anger becomes inappropriate.

As you know, anger is not a problem in itself. Although it helps to be less angry sometimes, you should focus less on junking the emotion and more on finding positive ways to express yourself.

The following strategies can help you manage anger:

  1. Postpone your anger. Immediate anger can complicate issues and put you into trouble. Whenever a stressful situation arises, do not act rashly. Reflect on the issue first and decide how to feel about it.
  2. Exercise. Use exercise and physically challenging activities as outlets for your anger. Play a sport. Go jogging. Take a walk. Following a routine helps you release the emotion regularly.
  3. Forgive and forget. Don’t hold a grudge; it can only hurt you. Find a way to make peace between you and the person you’re at conflict with. Then move past the issue.
  4. Express your anger positively. You can express the emotion in a healthy manner. Choose your words carefully. Calmly explain what made you angry in the first place.
  5. Relax. Try out a variety of relaxation techniques. Relaxation reduces your stress levels and makes you less prone to getting angry.

· Deep breathing exercises

The Danger of Suppressing Anger

Take care not to mistake total control of your feelings with anger suppression.

Suppressing anger does not release the emotion from your mind. You temporarily bury it, and when it does come out, it’s magnified. Physical effects include headaches, high blood pressure and muscle pain (from chronic tension). Prolonged suppression of anger could lead to long-term depression.

If you have trouble managing and releasing your anger, seek professional help immediately before things get out of hand.
